Teaching Your Kids to Cook
WHY? The answers are many.
Kids love to help when it comes to cooking.
It can be a time of bonding for child and parent.
They will have great fun while you are having fun also.
It is a good way for them to learn responsibility and a skill they can use in life.
WHEN? The earlier you can start the better.
As your kids grow so will their skills. Take cooking eggs for example. Starting out you may have to crack the egg and then let them put the egg into the bowl. Soon, however, they will be able to crack the egg successfully and actually get it into the bowl. Encouraging them to do whatever they can do is important. Doing what they can do makes them feel important.
Kids learn by doing. Making scrambled eggs, cookies, pumpkin pie, (with a ready made shell), chocolate frosting, muffins, brownies, etc., are just a start. Letting a child roll a ball of dough in their hands and placing it on the cookie sheet plays with their senses of sight, touch and smell. Kids, (and big kids too!), love the sense of taste.
There’s nothing more delightful than being able to lick the beaters after you’ve made a bowl of chocolate frosting. A little icing on the fingers and cheeks won’t hurt them. But, the time you spend with them cooking will last a life time.
Cooking with your kids and as a family is a great way to keep your children talking. Keeping them involved in things like cooking lets them know you think they are special.
Don’t fret over the little messes they make, enjoy the thrill of watching them taste their creation. Remember this moment always. Kids grow up in a hurry, giving them something special to remember is special and cooking with them is a memory they will take with them through life.
